My name is Janice Cathcart and I am a Registered Psychologist in the province of Alberta. For over 25 years, I have been providing assessment and therapy within hospital and community settings. Prior to my psychology career, I was a mental health nurse in both inpatient and outpatient psychiatry. Following my psychology training, I worked at Alberta Health Services (AHS) for 23 years, in mental health, addictions, and headache/chronic pain programs.
I have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of British Columbia (UBC), and a Master's degree in Counselling from the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC). I also studied psychology at UBC and at the University of Calgary. Prior to becoming registered as a psychologist, I completed a 12-month supervised internship at Alberta Health Services (AHS), in the areas of chronic pain and outpatient psychiatry.
In addition, I have advanced training in the following areas:
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) (including CBT for Insomnia)
Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT),
Trauma-Focused Therapy (including Accelerated Resolution Therapy - ART)
Mindfulness Meditation and Mindful Self-Compassion
I love to spend my free time outdoors with my partner and my dog. I have raised 2 young adults who challenge and inspire me daily.
In my current practice, I work with individuals who are struggling to manage anxiety, stress, insomnia, and/or adjusting to life transitions, loss, and health conditions.
I take pride in practising evidence-based therapies, and I consider ongoing education and consultation essential to my practice. My approach is compassionate, client-centered, and flexible. We will work together to determine your goals for therapy, as well as the structure and pacing of the process. It is important for you to know that I have a change-oriented approach and I consider therapy an active process involving collaboration between the client and the therapist. We will work together to help you move toward more fully living the life you desire.
