About Me

My name is Janice Cathcart and I am a Registered Psychologist in the province of Alberta.  Over the past 25 years, I have been providing assessment and therapy in a variety of settings.  After graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of British Columbia (UBC), I practised nursing in palliative care, northern outpost nursing and psychiatry.  I then returned to UBC to study psychology.  I completed a Master’s degree in Counselling at the University of Northern British Columbia, and I subsequently continued my studies in psychology at the University of Calgary.  I completed a supervised internship at Alberta Health Services (AHS), primarily in chronic pain management.  I worked at AHS for almost 23 years, in the areas of outpatient psychiatry, addictions, and headaches/chronic pain programs.

In addition to my graduate education in Counselling Psychology, I have further training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT), Trauma-Focused Therapy (including Accelerated Resolution Therapy - ART), Chronic Pain Self-Management, Mindfulness Meditation and Motivational Interviewing.

Areas of Focus

My current practice is focused primarily in the areas of chronic pain (including headaches), anxiety, depression, stress management, and life transitions.

I take pride in incorporating evidence-based therapies, and I consider ongoing education and consultation essential to my practice.  My approach is compassionate, client-centered and collaborative.  We will work together to determine your goals for therapy, as well as the structure and pacing of the process.  It is important for you to know that I have a change oriented approach, as I make the assumption that you are seeking therapy in order to make a change in your life, or at least explore the possibility of change.

My approach is always tailored to the needs of each individual, and aims to address past and present issues that may be causing distress.  This allows new insights and coping strategies to emerge, freeing you to more fully live the life you desire.
